“Not only genius in its craftsmanship, but prophetic—a brilliant tragedy that defines a moment in history”
—The Globe and Mail
One of the world’s premier ballet companies takes the City Center stage for the first time in 15 years, juxtaposing classical artistry with raw power in an evening of unforgettable performances featuring live music by The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra.
Leading the repertory is Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto, a classically inventive and virtuosic interpretation of Shostakovich that combines intimate pas de deux with grand corps de ballet compositions.
British choreographer David Dawson’s Anima Animus, originally commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet, brims with restless, relentless choreography—a ferocious interplay between light and dark that sets the dancers free to devour the space with abandon.
Closing the program is Angels’ Atlas by Canadian dance icon Crystal Pite: an astonishing piece for 36 performers that became an unwitting requiem for life as we knew it when it premiered to rapturous reviews in February 2020. Beneath an ethereal canopy of reflected morphing light (created by Jay Gower Taylor and Tom Visser from a unique analog system) the Company glides, heaves, and trembles to choral liturgies and pulsing rhythms alike.
Tickets go on sale September 6 to members and September 13 to the general public. Get advance access to the full season when you join Friends of City Center at the $100 level or above.
